Roman statesman, playwright, and philosopher of the first century AD, one of the great figures of stoicism. Adviser (and later victim) to the emperor Nero, he wrote the Letters to Lucilius and essays such as On the Shortness of Life, which remain the most accessible Stoic guides to time, wealth, and happiness. Alongside Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus, he anchors a Stoic ethics that has been revived for modern readers by writers like Ryan Holiday.
