Greek Stoic philosopher (c. 50–135 AD) born into slavery and later freed, who taught a practical Stoicism centred on the dichotomy of control: distinguishing what is "up to us" from what is not. His teachings survive in the Discourses and the Enchiridion, recorded by his student Arrian, and shaped later Stoics including Marcus Aurelius. His insistence on focusing only on one's own judgments and choices underpins the blog's interest in personal autonomy and equanimity, and made him a favourite source for modern popularisers like Ryan Holiday.
