The study of how one ought to live and act — what makes a life good and a choice right. The blog draws mostly on the virtue tradition running from Aristotle, who located the good life in eudaimonia and the cultivation of character, through the Stoicism of Seneca and Marcus Aurelius, who tied virtue to living in accordance with reason and nature. Against this it weighs the consequentialist strand behind effective altruism, which asks coldly how to do the most good with limited resources. Ethics here is less a set of rules than a practical question about meaning-making and how to spend a finite life well.
