American psychologist (born 1942) widely regarded as the father of positive psychology, the scientific study of what makes life worth living. Early in his career he developed the theory of learned helplessness; he later pivoted the field from pathology toward flourishing, happiness, and resilience. In Authentic Happiness and Flourish he set out his PERMA model — positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment — overlapping with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's work on flow. His emphasis on optimism, character strengths, and habits that build wellbeing runs through the blog's interest in the good life.
