The stable patterns of thought, feeling, and behaviour that distinguish one person from another, most often mapped onto the "Big Five" traits of openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. These traits are substantially heritable and fairly stable across adulthood, which complicates parenting and naive self-help promises of total reinvention. Jordan Peterson built much of his public work on trait psychology, while Jonathan Haidt has used it to explain moral and political difference. Personality interacts with habits and decision-making: knowing your own dispositions lets you design a life and a routine that work with your grain rather than against it.
