American essayist, naturalist, and Transcendentalist (1817–1862), best known for Walden, his account of two years living simply in a cabin by a Massachusetts pond. His celebration of minimalism, frugality, and self-reliance — "to live deliberately" and reduce life to its essentials — is a philosophical ancestor of FIRE and the blog's interest in personal autonomy. His essay Civil Disobedience argued for following conscience over conformity, and his counting the true cost of things in hours of life remains a sharp lens on consumerism and the good life.
