English writer, critic, and Christian apologist (1874–1936), famous for his paradoxes, wit, and prolific output across essays, fiction and literature, and theology. Among his best-known works are Orthodoxy, The Man Who Was Thursday, and the Father Brown detective stories. He is the source of "Chesterton's fence" — the principle that one should understand why a rule or constraint exists before removing it — a favourite of careful decision-making and a recurring touchstone in rationality circles for its caution against careless reform.
