German-born American entrepreneur and venture capitalist (born 1967) who co-founded PayPal and was the first outside investor in Facebook, later launching the data firm Palantir and the venture fund Founders Fund. In Zero to One he argues that the most valuable companies create something genuinely new rather than competing on the margins — a defence of bold, contrarian bets and monopoly-building. A self-styled philosophical investor influenced by René Girard, he prizes progress and questions the conventional wisdom that markets are always efficient. He shares the techno-optimist milieu of Marc Andreessen and Paul Graham.
